Actual Capacity

All power banks list their capacity (mAh) based on the nominal voltage of the battery cells. It does not accurately represent how many recharges you’ll get with the power bank. Actual capacity shows how much power you’ll actually get from a power bank.

You can divide the actual capacity below by your device’s battery capacity. That will give you a realistic estimate on the number of charges it will provide.

  • Listed Capacity: 5,000mAh
  • Actual Capacity:
    • Phone Charging: 3,500mAh
    • Switch Charging: 2,700mAh

Actual capacities are estimates are based on capacity testing and calculation.

First Impression

The Novoo PowerCube Mini 5000 is a legit pocket sized USB-C PD power bank. Its form factor is like “lipstick” sized power banks, but square instead of round. It is larger and heavier than other mini power banks. But those don’t support USB-C Power Delivery and are usually less than 5,000mAh. The Novoo approach is a good compromise between old, small design and new tech.

The iPhone 8 fast charges when using a USB-C to Lightning cable. We see the usual power negotiations. Connection starts at 5V, then moves up to 9V. Learn more about fast charging iPhones.

If you connect to the USB-A port it’ll charge ~30% slower.

The Moto G6 fast charges using the Quick Charge port. This will be the same for Samsung and Quick Charge enabled Android phones. If connected to the USB-C port it’ll charge ~50% slower. The Google Pixel and Android phones that support USB Power Delivery will fast charge on the USB-C port. Learn more about fast charging various Android phones.

The Nintendo Switch charges at the expected rate with a 12V charger. Chargers which offer 12V but not 15V will under perform with the Switch. It under draws power, maxing out at 12W instead of 18W with a 9V or 15V charger. The issue is with the Switch, not the charger. Please note 12W is still more than enough to charge the Switch in handheld mode while you play. Learn more about charging the Switch.

The PD protocol negotiation with the Switch is typical. It connects at 5V and moved up to 12V after negotiations. Current steps up once the 12V connection is made.

Limited Capacity

USB power banks banks that offer less than 10,000mAh are easy to carry. And best used as a backup and to top off devices. But when they offer fast charging tech you need to be mindful how limited their capacity will be.

In my capacity testing the PowerCube Mini 5000 recharged a sleeping Nintendo Switch up to 62%. That is less than 2 hours of playtime with Zelda or Mario. It would be enough to recharge an iPhone 8 once. But larger phones may not get a full 0-100% charge. And it won’t support two phones well.

If battery life comes up shy during your commute or daily routine this power bank can get you over the hump. You’ll hardly notice it in your bag. And you can recharge it with any USB-A power source (or most USB-C chargers) at home or work. Just don’t rely on it for keeping several devices up and running.

The Novoo PowerCube Mini 5000 works great as a portable charger for most USB-C phones. The USB-C side will fast charge newer iPhones as well as Google, Essential, Razer, and Xiaomi phones. The USB-A side with Quick Charge 3.0 will fast charge HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung phones. It also supports smaller USB-C PD devices such as the Nintendo Switch. But its limited capacity won’t fully recharge larger batteries.

*I did find a discrepancy between the published specs and my testing. The USB-C output is listed as 5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A. My USB Power Delivery PD sniffer reported 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A. During testing I didn’t see more than 2A @ 5V, backing the PD sniffer’s report. I reached out to Omars. The project manager said 5V output is limited to 2A with USB Power Delivery devices (such as my sniffer). But with regular USB-C devices it can reach 5V/3A. Almost no USB PD devices only charge at 5V, so I wouldn’t expect anyone to see a performance issue.

The PowerCube Mini 5000 can charge via USB-C and USB-A at the same time. But doing so drops the USB-C output to 5V. That removes fast charging for Apple and Google phones. The Switch drops from 12W to 9.4W. And with the limited capacity the power bank won’t last long charging two devices at once. With ports on either side you can set this up between you and your travel companion. Be sure you have the right cables to use with both phones.

Bottom Line

The Novoo PowerCube Mini 5000 is a truly pocket sized option for fast charging your small USB-C devices. So long as you are aware of its limited capacity. If you like the design but want more time check out the Novoo PowerCube Mini 10000.
