Cons:

First Impression

The BlitzWolf BW-S10 30W USB PD has a built-in EU plug. A great option for those living in Europe. Or wanting a dedicated EU travel charger. Ignoring the EU plug itself the charger is normal size for a 30W USB-C PD charger. Smaller than some of its peers, but heavier than others. If it had a foldable US plug I’d call it travel friendly. The exterior is glossy on all sides. Pretty out of the box, but collects finger prints over time. Being in the USA myself I used a world plug adapter during my testing.

The iPhone 8 fast charges when using a USB-C to Lightning cable. We see the usual power negotiations. Connection starts at 5V, then moves up to 9V. Learn more about fast charging iPhones.

The Moto G6 does regular charging via USB-C, even though Quick Charge 3.0 is offers over USB-C. Motorola doesn’t use Quick Charge, its TurboPower tech mimics it. So 100% compatibility isn’t guaranteed. Not to mention Quick Charge over USB-C isn’t sanctioned. Samsung and proper Quick Charge enabled Android phones should see better results.

The Google Pixel and Android phones that support USB Power Delivery will fast charge on the USB-C port. Learn more about fast charging various Android phones.

The Nintendo Switch charges at its max rate, charging while you play. Its charge rate while sleeping is also normal. While this charger offers 15V there isn’t enough current to power a docked Switch. That requires at least 2.6A, this tops out at 2A. Learn more about charging the Switch.

The PD protocol negotiation with the Switch is typical. It connects at 5V and moved up to 15V after negotiations. Current steps up once the 15V connection is made.

As a 30W charger it can support 12-inch laptops. The MacBook Pro 13-inch comes with a 60W charger, so this 30W charger is not a great option for it. But we can see it provides as much power as it can. And power negotiation is normal. It would extend battery life in a pinch. Learn more about charging USB-C laptops.

Fast Charging Standards Over USB-C & USB-IF Specifications

The BW-S10’s USB-C port supports both USB Power Delivery and Quick Charge 3.0. The presence of Quick Charge 3.0 on the USB-C connection is against USB-IF specifications.

USB-C includes communication lines, along with power and data lines. The comm lines allow power negotiation without disrupting data transfers. USB Power Delivery uses these comm lines. As does Quick Charge 4+. But fast charging standards which pre-date USB-C do not. Instead they manipulate the data lines to negotiate power. That go against USB-C specifications, as it disrupts data transfers. But one doesn’t use data transfers with a dedicated charger.

In 2016, some USB-C chargers started offering Quick Charge 3.0. A few USB-C focused engineers warned against this practice and cited USB-IF specifications. But the predicted consequences were vague. As it turned out, nothing bad happened. Since then many chargers have operated this way, against specs. But there have been no reports of real world issues.

I have also not run into any issues with these fast charging standards on this or any other charger. But you should be aware of all the information before buying.

If you’re a stickler for meeting USB-C specifications this isn’t a good charger for you. If you’re more pragmatic it works well and has no known issues.

Summary

The BlitzWolf BW-S10 30W USB PD is a typical 30W USB-C PD wall charger with a built-in EU plug. The charger is compact for silicon based technology. And offers the full range of power profiles. It also offers Quick Charge 3.0 over USB-C. While that goes against USB-IF specifications there’s no real world downside.

BlitzWolf BW-S10 30W USB PD and universal plug adapter

BlitzWolf BW-S10 30W USB PD and universal plug adapter

As a 30W USB-C PD charger with Quick Charge 3.0 it can fast charge most small to medium sized USB-C devices. Both USB PD and Quick Charge phones and tablets. As well as Samsung, but not Motorola. It charges the Nintendo Switch while you play in handheld mode. And it’ll fully powers a 12-inch laptop.

*The power output specs printed on the charger and its user manual don’t match up to what my PD sniffer found. BlitzWolf lists 5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/2A, 15V/2A, 20V/1.5A. But what I found was 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/2.5A, 15V/2A, 20V/1.5A. The 9V and 12V power profiles offer more current than listed. What is offered is in line with 30W USB-C PD chargers. This was likely a typo on BlitzWolf’s part. I would prefer listed specs to be accurate. But what I found is not a problem.

Temperature measurements were normal, and within safe to handle limits. I used the charger to run and recharge the MacBook Pro for a while. Most of the surface got up to 107.1°F (41.7°C). The hottest point was 119°F (48.3°C). It is safe to handle any type of solid material up to 122°F (50°C). Plastic enclosures, such as this, are safe at even hotter temperatures.

Being a non-top brand and sold directly from China cuts down on the price. Even with international shipping it is less than similar chargers available on Amazon. There is a warranty and return policy, but English based support may be limited to email. The user manual did have English sections, and not badly written at that. Shipping times will vary. It was 3 weeks for me in the USA.

About BlitzWolf

BlitzWolf offers international support (web, email, international phone). Their products include an 18 month warranty and a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. While they have a small Amazon store (no USB-C chargers) they are much more closely tied to Banggood.

About Banggood

Banggood is a Chinese e-commerce retailer that focuses on gadgets and electronics. They ship worldwide, with warehouses in Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, and the United States. They receive significant traffic from the USA. But are better known in other countries. Shipping to the USA is free for orders of $50 or more. But takes 7-20 business days if not in a regional warehouse. Closer countries usually see faster shipping.

Banggood’s reps are aware of how Chinese retailers are viewed. And they are realistic about the challenges they all face. They have recommended using PayPal over credit card for the added security and want customers to understand the longer ship times before they order.

Bottom Line

The BlitzWolf BW-S10 30W USB PD is a solid charger for European USB-C device owners. Good for phones, tablets, the Switch, and small laptops. It gives an option outside of Amazon and local retailers. And at a better price. But be sure to order it well ahead of when you might need it for upcoming travels.
